Job Description

With heritage dating back to 1872, Aberystwyth University is a unique institution located on the beautiful West Wales coast.  The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 named Aberystwyth University “University of the Year for Teaching Quality” for an unprecedented second successive year and the 2018 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) awarded the Institution Gold status.  The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) saw 95% of Aberystwyth’s research classified as “internationally recognised standard or higher”, which is testament to the importance of research activities within the University’s overall plans.

The Department of Law and Criminology has a rich legacy of education and academia that currently manifests itself in an outstanding student experience, exceptionally high levels of employability and world-class research.  Degrees are recognised by the Bar Standards Board and the Solicitors Regulation Authority, enabling progression routes into the profession.  There is also significant provision of teaching in Welsh.

The new Head of Law and Criminology will be a skilled academic manager with the credibility to lead staff on the next phase of the Department’s journey.  In the increasingly competitive world of UK higher education the ability of the Department to articulate its distinctiveness will be critical in terms of it continuing to attract the brightest and best students at all levels.  One element of this includes its links with the profession and, of course, the extent to which research interacts with teaching and learning.  To this end, recent successes in grant capture highlight the Departments position as a leader in its field, and the new Head will be instrumental in ensuring that this momentum can be harnessed and used.

We are a Bilingual Institution which complies with the Welsh Language Standards and is committed to Equal Opportunities. You are welcome to apply for any vacancy in Welsh or English and any application submitted will be treated equally.
