Head of Department- Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences
With heritage dating back to 1872, Aberystwyth University is a unique institution located on the beautiful West Wales coast. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 named Aberystwyth University “University of the Year for Teaching Quality” and the 2018 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) awarded the Institution Gold status. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) saw 95% of Aberystwyth’s research classified as “internationally recognised standard or higher”, which is testament to the importance of research activities within the University’s overall plans.
The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is an internationally renowned teaching and research centre. Its focus upon food security, bioenergy, sustainability and climate change enables it to produce award-winning research with genuine impact, as well as the provision of outstanding, accredited teaching to students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is in receipt of funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Welsh Government, DEFRA and the European Union and it is home to the National Plant Phenomics Centre as well as being part of the BEACON Centre of Excellence for Biorefining, which is a Wales-based academic partnership worth over £20 million.
This is a rare opportunity for a world-class academic to assume leadership of IBERS. Located within the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences, there are incredible foundations from which the new Head of Institute can maintain and build upon activities to date. Applicants should have a strong personal research track record in a relevant discipline, as well as significant experience of course development and teaching. They will be passionate about the student experience and have the leadership qualities to motivate and support staff in pursuit of a vibrant and exciting strategy at both a Faculty- and University-wide level.
